Carteles Processed
These art deco magazine images were the covers of the weekly magazine "Carteles" published in Havana Cuba from 1919 through 1960. My uncle Emilio De Mesa was a sports writer for this publication from mid 1941 through mid 1945 ... through the years of World War II. Mr De Mesa fished with Ernest Hemingway and was inducted into the Fishing Hall of Fame for having introduced rod and reel fishing to Cuba. (Allow me to brag a little!) Cuba was one of our allies in the war. The art on the cover pages was done by Mr Andres Garcia. He has been described as the Norman Rockwell of Cuba but his work is reflective of the Vargas styles of the era. The war stamps on the cover and the descriptions of the articles within reflect the issues of the war. The date printed on the covers will state the year and the week but some of the war years the actual date was not printed. AÑO is the word for YEAR in Spanish. Year number 22 is 1941, 23 is 1942 and so one. The next number on the date is the week of the year it was printed. When my uncle retired the magazine gave him bound copies of the magazines in which his articles appeared. I have had these books professionally unbound and the covers scanned into digital images. I have restored the images, ie. removed small tears and bounding glue marks with PhotoShop. The colors have been enhanced to bring out the original brilliance but the normal aging marks have been left to reflect their "antique" quality.
I print these images on an Epson 2400 inkjet printer on 8.5 X 11 inch Enhanced Matte Paper. Paper and UltraChrome ink on these images are rated to last 90 years for lightfastness. I have framed these pictures for myself using inexpensive frames from Office Depot and they look terrific. I am selling the print and NOT the frame. Go to http://shop.vendio.com/jgjulio/home.html
Thanks for looking.
